As our business grows rapidly, we need a database that can enable us to have [the] capacity in scaling and availability and it also needs to be [a] relational database. At that time we are already a Google Cloud Platform customer and after some researches, we think Google Cloud Spanner can give us both.
  • Super high availability
  • Scales automatically
  • High standard SLA
  • Lack MySQL support.
  • Cannot edit the table on the fly.
  • Kind of high learn curve to migrate.
If you have a large relational database and it is growing fast on daily basis, and if you have a strong need in ACID across all your clusters, and most importantly, if you need to maintain high availability in a large region, Google Cloud Spanner can be a very good choice.

  • It increased our database availability.
  • It improved our database performance.
  • We do not have to maintain a database cluster anymore.
At that point, we were looking at something [that] can hold our relational database, [...] provide stable connection, and maintain high ACID transition. BigTable is for nonrelational database so it was out of our [sight] very quickly. BigQuery is a data warehouse that can hold huge amount of data but not ideal for transition. AWS RDS is [...] similar to Spanner but because most of our services are already on GCP, so we went with Spanner.
